HYENAS is a garage rock band from Surabaya, Indonesia. The band was founded in 2015 by guitarist Mohammad Rizky Fertino, bassist Badrussalam and drummer Ghalih Fadjar Surbhakti.
It was Tino, guitarist of screamo act Day for Uncle Sam, met Kill Or Be Killed’s bassist Badruss and drummer Ghalih from screamo act Luna Last Smile at a cafe in central part of Surabaya in April 2015.
The threesome shared mutual favorite bands such as Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, The Sigit, and The Changcuters, and discussed about a possibility to form a side project differed from their previous works, and played music like their mutual heroes.
The triumphant agreed to join force to form a band which later named Hyenas. Ghalih’s fellow bandmate Yosua Nicholas Siahaan who played guitars/vocals for Luna Last Smile and guitarist of Sweet Smile, was recruited later to complete the initial formation.
The new-founded Hyenas began to write their own songs and played in some gigs around Surabaya.
EP Sketsa Ulam
In July 2015, Hyenas entered Rambpage Recording which lies on Gang Pasar off Jalan Wiyung, Surabaya, to record materials for future EP. Rambpage’s owner “Rambo” Angky Dian Permana Putra produced, mixed and mastered the EP project. The recording session was wrapped in April 2016.
On August 23, the band released their first single titled Revolusi on their Youtube channel.
The EP title and launch date were revealed on December 8, 2015. The Hyenas official Facebook published poster of gig Considering of Reward 2, that would be organized on May 13, 2016 at Monkasel, Surabaya. The future debut EP was titled Sketsa Ulam. All three bands Day for Uncle Sam, Kill Or Be Killed and Luna Last Smile were listed on the gig bill.
The band’s official Soundcloud account published new single Remaja Macam Tai on January 3, 2016.
The EP launch date was rescheduled. On April 14, Hyenas’ Facebook promulgated new poster about the launch date. The poster said the launch party would take place at Indie Bergerak on May 28, at P-Two Cafe Surabaya, organized by Surabaya Street Jam.
Sketsa Ulam was finally launched at Indie Bergerak. Fellow Surabaya bands who played at the party were Antrax Asshole, The Shain, Charlie’s Rum and The Caplin, Tikam, Power Roster, The Classhat, Burning Idea and Fire Bender.

The whole songs were written by Ghalih and Yosua. Fertino designed the cover album and lay out.
Guitarist Tino quit the band after the EP Sketsa Ulam launch party due to previous commitment with his band Day for Uncle Sam. The DfUS was on the midst of releasing their debut full-length album during Tino’s involment in Hyenas.
The album which later titled Floribus Venenosa was released on September 25, 2016 at an exclusive gig held at Monkasel.
Badrus Salam parted ways with Hyenas in July 2016 due to financial issue. He refused to earn money only from CD and merchandise selling only, but also demanded performance fee.
Yosua and Ghalih continued the band and played as duo during live. Later they employed session bassists Zainal and Wiwit as additional musicians to fill vacant-bass section.
Along with other 13 bands, Hynas participated in a compilation album, initiated by The Sigit’s fans club 91 Insurgent Army and Yogyakarta-based independent label Otakotor Records. The album titled Cultvasion Compilation was released on August 17, 2016. The launch party was held on August 27, at Earth Cafe Yogyakarta. Hyenas co-headlined the gig together with Banana For Silvy, Mukalangka, Trouble Maker, and Temaram.
Drummer Ghalih Surbhakti in recent interview with www.Musik.or.id said Hyenas has been working for new EP, scheduled to be released in 2018.
He added the band plays more into garage rock/punk, but also incorporating Rock n’ Roll, stoner rock and hard rock elements into their music.
