Kopi Rocker 86 celebrates its second anniversary

When a myriad of rock and metal musicians celebrating the anniversary of an Indonesian typical small humble street side coffee shop, apparently the coffee must be very good or it has attractive waitresses.

But, none of any answer above is quietly right. Kopi Rocker 86 is not just a coffee shop, it is a home base. Home base for hundreds of rock music fans in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, the capital city of East Java Province, and one of rock and metal music epicentrum in Nusantara.

“Kopi Rocker 86 is not even a community, it is a house, a house to share everything about music, music, music…” said Marianto a.k.a Yans Mario. Www.Musik.or.id conducted an interview with him and three other Kopi Rocker 86’s regulars today (April 7). They were Black Jack‘s frontman Dani Triyanto, Metallion‘s Boni Arnanto, and Surabaya-based black metal act Alam Kubur‘s bassist Qian.

He added “There is no seniority hierarchy here. Everybody is on equal footing. That’s Kopi Rocker 86’s jargon,”

Kopi Rocker 86 is a small coffee shop in Jalan Kranggan number 86, opposite SMK 4 Surabaya. Previously known as Warung Jaya Accept, the owner’s name, founded in 2002. Jaya Accept is an 80’s metal music aficionados. Rock music is turned loudly there and discussion about music is held everyday. It draws rock and metal musicians and music enthusiasts’ attention to stop by.

It was April 10, 2015, in a Facebook group, its regulars declared the coffee shop’s name changed to Kopi Rocker 86. April 10 then is celebrated as its date of birth. The name was suggested by Mariyanto himself.

Its first anniversary was celebrated by throwing a gig party on April 3, 2016 at GNI Bubutan Building, showcasing a bunch of bands who happened its regulars.

This year’s gig anniversary will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Taman Remaja Surabaya, Jl. Kusuma Bangsa 112 – 114 (beside THR), Surabaya. The gig will showcase twelve well-established rock and metal bands in Greater Surabaya area. Former Boomerang’s frontman Roy Jeconiah will headline the show. Roy will play with Laskar Metal.

Qian said Roy Jeconiah, the Surabayan rock hero, is very close with the 86 regulars. Yans Mario added when Roy in Surabaya, he would stop by at the 86.

To date, the Kopi Rocker 86 has released a compilation CD on February 18, 2017. It consists tracks from thirteen bands. The launch party showcasing 26 bands was held at Hall Ijen Cafe, on Jalan Arief Rahman Hakim 126, Surabaya. The second volume of the compilation CD is scheduled to be issued in the end of 2017.

Last year’s Ramadhan, the Kopi Rocker 86 held an iftar, a dinner to break the fast. It was attended by 500 regulars.
