One of the most prominent underground society in South Sulawesi, the Makassar Metal Syndicate brings back its biannual GRINDHOUSE FEST gig series. This time, the fest’s third installment will be held as a two-day metal camp, in a resort island, the Khayangan Island (formerly Marrouw Island), on April 22 and 23, 2017.

The “GRINDHOUSE FEST 2017: Island Metal Camp” offers a  showcase of 18 well-established metal bands from Makassar, and a two-day full retreat for Makassarese extreme music fans. The Makassar Metal Syndicate provides a campsite to festival goers with excellent beautiful beach view for an affordable package.

Along with the concert, the festival will hold music discussion, beach swimming and basking in the sun, morning exercise/calisthenic, etc.

Andi Ariyandhi from Makassar Metal Syndicate in his interview with www.Musik.or.id stated: the fest aims to strengthen the bonding between the society members; and to motivate local bands to publish their records (single or demo CD, minimum), since the main requirement to participate in this festival is each band plays its own songs. This festival can be an indicator of local music development progress.

Grindhouse Fest is a house gig for the Makassar Metal Syndicate band members. The idea came from the the society’s headquarter called The Grindhouse. The Grindhouse has a big role in the Makassar underground movement. The place becomes a rendezvous for extreme music enthusiast in Makassar. The house also serves as a shelter for any society’s guest from other towns.  To honor its HQ, Andi, Hendrik, Idol, Lhio, and Pay made a new gig series called Grindhouse Fest. The first installment kicked off in 2013 at RRI Tennis Court Makassar.

  The festival goer brings his/her own camping equipment.
• Tend Package, IDR 250K
  For 2 persons, included festival tickets, return ferry tickets, and a 2-person tent.
• Room Package, IDR 650K
  For 4 persons, included festival tickets, return ferry tickets, and a standard room with fan.
  Upgrading to air-conditioned room add IDR 200K.

The ferry service from Makassar to Kayangan Island will start from 10 AM to 5 PM, on Saturday, April 22, 2017. After 5 PM, the ticket collection is closed and the ferriage will be stopped.

The Khayangan Island lies about 0.8 KM west of Makassar. Located at 5°06’49.7″S 119°24’00.6″E, the island is about 1 HA in total area. It can be reached in about 15 minutes from Makassar’s Soekarno-Hatta Port.

Makassar Metal Syndicate

Makassar Metal Syndicate was founded on December 14, 2008 by Woko, Wawan Betet, Baso, Ndo, Ido, Ical Bibir and the Betek Hell Crew’s members. Their first event was Makassar Metal Madness. To date, the community has set up many reputable underground gigs, i.e (selected only) :
