Benteng Bawah Tanah 5: Release the Colossal Damage

The Sultanate of Yogyakarta citizen will witness the comeback of Benteng Bawah Tanah, an important gig series in the Yogyakarta metal realm. The fifth installment of Benteng Bawah Tanah will be organized on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Gedung Basiyo – XT Square, Yogyakarta.

The festival owner, Benteng Metal Community has set “Release the Colossal Damage” as the main theme. 32 bands are scheduled to perform at the very show, featuring Yogyakarta’s metal veterans Damnation, Helldust, Chronic Injury and Bali-based death metal act Helldeath.

Brutal death metal veteran Damnation is enjoying their new level of stardom since its inception in 1999, after releasing debut full-length album titled The Prophet Revenge in 2016. It was the third recording attempt, after two previous failed efforts.

In 2001, Damnation recorded a bunch of materials in digital system. But they lost the recording master due to computer virus. The second endeavor was happened in 2005. The band recorded all materials in analog way, but shame, the master was lost in the studio.

The band entered Al Studio Jogjakarta in 2014 for the third attempt. 13 tracks were recorded from 2014 to 2015. Finally, debut The Prophet Revenge was released internationally by Russian’s independent label Internal Brutality Records on September 16, 2016.  The Indonesian version was released and distributed by Hitam Kelam Records on January 10 this year.

Damnation was founded by bassist Musthofa Kamal (known under moniker Camel) in 1999, after parted ways with Death Vomit, and Chronic Injury’s frontman Slamet Triyono Pambudi. With Death Vomit, Camel has recorded his bass tracks in three demos: Promo Tape ’96 (1996), Promo Tape 1997, and Spirit of Blasphemy (1998).

Last formation consists of Camel (bass), Krisna (drums) and Boni (guitras). They employ additional singer during live performance. In January 13, 2017, Damnation announced frontmen Donny Iblis from Funeral Inception and Gobel from Rotten Corpse will tour with them to support debut The Prophet Revenge.

Another metal veteran who will play at Benteng Bawah Tanah 5 is Chronic Injury. The band was founded in 1997 by Slamet Triyono Pambudi (vocals), Adith Senksu (bass), Ronnie (drums), Wury (guitars). Slamet later quit the band and co-founded Damnation in 1999. He rejoined Chronic Injury in 2005 during his tenure in Damnation.

Chronic Injury released an eponymous demo tape consisted of 5 tracks in 1999.

The later line up comprises Slamet (vocals), Vishnu (guitars), Krisna (drums), and Benk (bass).

Yogyakarta-based blackened death metal sextet Helldust celebrates a new phase of the band’s dark passage when their duo singers Gita Desilia and Yudha Indra Pratama married each other in May 2017.

Helldust was founded in 2011, now comprises Gita Desilia (vocals), Yudha Indra Pratama (vocals), Firdaus Muzaki (drums), Bayu Sholeh Krisnanjaya (guitars), Christian Adi (guitars), and Robby (bass).

“Benteng Metal Community was founded in 1995, but dormant for so long until it was reformed in 2008,” Soni Putra Dewantara from BMC told www.Musik.or.id.

He said Benteng Bawah Tanah was organized for the first time on December 7, 1997 at Benteng Vredeburg Museum, Malioboro. But, the community has reset and restarted it, and considered Benteng Bawah Tanah that held on October 25, 2009 as the first installment. It was organized at League Cafe, Hotel Borobudur, Jombor.

The second issue took place on December 4, 2011 at Sport-hall Kridosono.  At the same place, BMC organized the third edition on April 21, 2013 with theme “Reborn in Unity”.

With more than 60 participants in 2 days, the fourth installment is recognized as the biggest Benteng Bawah Tanah ever. The Benteng Bawah Tanah #4 was held on December 21 and 22, 2013 at Jogja National Museum. The number 4’s theme was “An Aggression of Monarchy Division”.

Soni who plays bass for metal act Suffered revealed the community’s next project is to release a compilation CD.
